Obama Speaks About Tech and War at U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum

  • This morning, President Obama spoke at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C. His speech comes just a few days after this year's Holocaust Remembrance Day. The ceremony was introduced by Pulitzer Prize winning writer, Elie Wiezel.

Obama was reportedly set to issue an executive order Monday that will allow U.S. officials for the first time to impose sanctions against foreign nationals found to have used new technologies, from cellphone tracking to Internet monitoring, to help carry out grave human rights abuses. Obama signed an executive order authorizing the new category of sanctions on Sunday.

The president also announced a set of U.S. development “challenge” grants designed to encourage technology companies to develop new ways to help the victimized residents of certain countries better detect and quickly alert others to impending dangers. He will unveil a high-level government panel to serve as a clearinghouse for real-time intelligence, policymaking and other issues related to mass killing.
