Have You Unzipped Google Today?

  • Google has split its home page in half today in honor of Gideon Sundback, the electrical engineer responsible for the modern zipper.

Sundback, who would have been 132 on April 24, 2012, created the zipper we know today by placing a dimple on the underside of each interlocking tooth as well as a nib on the top -- resulting in a stronger and more secure zip.

According to The Guardian, Sundback initially proposed the new zipper as a replacement for hook-and-eye fasteners on women's boots, but by the 1930s, the new mechanism had become a regular feature on trousers and dresses. He also created the manufacturing machine for the new zipper.

Google's interactive doodle invites browsers to pull down on the zipper with their cursors and ultimately unveil a Google Search page for the inventor himself.
