How Social Were the 2012 MTV Movie Awards? Our Highlights

As expected, the 2012 MTV Awards dominated Twitter on Sunday night from Los Angeles.

Worldwide trending topics on Twitter related to the show ranged from the way host Russell Brand pronounced “Kanye” (can-ye?) during his opening monologue, the name of every award winner and the names of nominated movies. Musical performance from fun., Wiz Kalifah and The Black Keys which was accompanied by Johnny Depp on guitar, also got the web talking.

The official hashtag for the event was #movieawards, although #MTVawards and #MTVMovieAwards were also highly shared on Twitter. There was also more than 45,000 check-ins on GetGlue for the show.

MTV’s Social Voting Category for “Best Hero,” opened voting on May 29 and was awarded based solely on tweets. The category generated nearly 1 million votes, ending the night with more than 800,000 votes via Twitter. Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, was the winner, with more than 430,000 votes.

Along with live-tweeting the entire event on MTV’s Twitter handle @MTV, the official award show website also gave viewers and fans behind-the-scenes views of the show with several webcams throughout the night.

MTV used the pre-show to premiere the trailer for “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” featuring Logan Lurman and Emma Watson, which turned into a trending topic soon after its premier.
