  • There seems to be some confusion here.

Technically, June 20 was the longest day of 2012 in the Northern Hemisphere, with the summer solstice gracing our night sky. But “Summer Solstice” is dominating the Google trends today, with tweeters carrying over into June 21 to talk about the heat that brings in the new season.

The explanation is a simple one.

Usually, the summer solstice arrives on June 21, but because this is a leap year, we get our longest day of the year one day early. From here, the days will get slightly shorter (meaning the sun will set earlier) until the winter solstice in December.

So, how will you be spending your precious time in the summer sun?
