The art of Ninjutsu is apparently quite popular among women in the theocratic dictatorship of Iran. A broadcast from the state-run television station is going viral, showing Iranian women flipping, training on monkey bars, and swinging deadly weapons. Many have called the 3,500-strong population of ninja and ninja trainees an “army“, though its unclear from the propaganda-ish TV segment whether the training is a part of any official defense strategy. Women are notoriously discriminated against in Iran, often subject to cruel punishments and chauvinistic laws (including restrictions from sports), so it’s unclear why ninjutsu is popular, let alone lauded on national television.
