  • Perhaps the ‘don’t text while driving’ PSAs should include any multi-ton vehicle traveling at high velocity carrying humans. A recent report found that Two Jetstar pilots had to abort a landing in Singapore due to an incoming text, causing one of the pilots to forget to engage the aircraft’s landing gear.

At around 1,000 feet, the report finds, the pilots noticed that “”something was not quite right”, eventually figuring out that the landing gear wasn’t in place. The distracting incoming texts (the pilot claims he was trying to turn the phone off), caused a 2-minute blindspot, from 2800 feet to 1000 feet, where the pilots failed to take appropriate measures.

Thankfully (?) switching off mobile phones is now part of the Jetstar checklist.
