A woman has opened up about her experiences with a rare condition that causes her to continuously feel like she’s about to orgasm in a condition known as PGAD. PGAD otherwise known as Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder was first documented in 2001. Since then there has been a reference to the disorder on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, a 20/20 special about it and a feature in a TLC show, all before 2008.
Now 23 year old Amanda McLaughlin is reminding everyone of this disorder that still has no cure or even treatments that are guaranteed to work. Her mother explains how guilty she feels for not believing her at first. She said, “The whole family thought she was just a whore and I thought she was a hypochondriac or making it up. My daughter was telling me she was in pain and the doctors were saying there was nothing wrong. And I believed them over my child,”
Amanda went on to explain that PGAD is often looked at like a joke, and according to other testimonials of women with this disease, they’ve gotten comments like, “I wish I could stay home and masturbate every day like you” from women or “oh I wish my wife had that” from men.
There actually IS a similar disorder for men called Priapism. Priapism is a persistent penile erection without any sexual desire, and is actually a type of Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder.
The key aspect of PGAD is that the arousal is entirely unwanted, and even after it’s relieved with either masturbating or sex, it comes back within hours. Amanda has found a fiance who supports her through this disorder though they both find it tough to work around.
Amanda is working with assistant professor of neurology Dr. Priyanka Gupta who said, “Because it’s such a rare diagnosis and there’s been such little research into PGAD, we don’t know exactly what causes it. We suspect it’s multifactorial...We’re going to be trying out a few different therapies and I’m very hopeful that we can get her functioning better.”
