Avril Lavigne – Hello Kitty

Avril Lavigne sure has changed from the cool tie-wearing rebel we once loved. In her new video, “Hello Kitty,” she’s got a bunch of Japanese backup dancers and uses words like “arigato” and “kawaii.” It’s Gwen Stefani’s harajuki girls all over again.
The song, co-written by her and her hubby Chad Kroeger, seems to just be a pile of Japanese stuff shoved into a cupcake and served in a confusing gift box. It’s not good.
Plus, people online have taken issue with the cultural appropriation inherent in a white girl dancing around like she’s Japanese.
It’s as bad as the SNL sketch “Japanese America Fun Time Now!”
