For the past 7 years, Google has been hosting their Doodle 4 Google contest, where they ask young artists to create their own interpretation of the Google logo. This year’s theme was, “If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place.”

Audrey Zhang’s doodle of a whimsical water cleaning machine called “Back to Mother Nature” beat out 100,000 doodle submissions. She referred to her creation as a “transformative water purifier” that would clean dirty rivers, lakes and oceans.

“I came up with the design when I learned that not everyone has clean water,” Zhang said in her acceptance speech.

The 11-year-old from Long Island won a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for her school, Island Trees Memorial Middle School. She took a trip to Google’s headquarters in California where she received a new computer, tablet and a T-shirt with her logo printed on the front. Google will also make a $40,000 donation in her name to a charity providing clean water to schools in Bangladesh.

For the first time ever, Google worked with the winner to animate the doodle.

    Congrats, Audrey!
