  • It was announced during this morning’s press conference that the New York Knicks have hired Derek Fisher as their new head coach.

The 39-year-old recently retired basketball player hasn’t signed the contract yet, but it has been said that he will receive a five-year deal for $25 million.

After playing in the Western Conference for his entire career, he is making the move to the East Coast. Phil Jackson, Knicks President, coached Fisher from 2000-2010 during his time on the Lakers, so it has been said that there was an interest in Fisher even before his season with the Oklahoma City Thunder ended.

Fisher was president of the National Basketball Players Association and has played on the Lakers, the Golden State Warriors, Utah Jazz and the Dallas Mavericks.

This past season was a rough one for the Knicks with just 37 wins. They also missed the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. Fisher and Jackson are planning on working together to hire a solid coaching staff.

Welcome to the Big Apple, Fisher!
