  • Here at What’s Trending, we aim to bring you all the hottest web content, all in one place. We scour the Internet for the latest cat video or to find the next meme. We let you know when an online star or “ce-web-rity” if you will, does something big. Well, we’ve decided it’s time to start shining the light on people who are using the Internet to do some pretty cool things. So, every Wednesday, we’ll be telling you about our #WebCrushWednesday. Feel free to tweet us @WhatsTrending to tell us who you think our next #WebCrushWednesday should be and why!

For our inaugural #WebCrushWednesday, we decided to choose none other than Jacke Conte.

  • Unnamed
  • If you’ve never heard of Jack before, but think he looks familiar, you’ve probably seen one of his many viral covers as part of the band, Pomplamoose, with Nataly Dawn. It was probably their cover of Queen B’s “Single Ladies” from back in 2009.

  • Since then, Jack and Nataly have continued as Pomplamoose, and continued to make some of the most innovative covers on YouTube. Even using projectors to make this crazy Pharrell mashup video.

  • Beyond Pomplamoose, Jack Conte has truly empowered online content creators. He is the founder of Patreon, a service that lets the fan base of a creator support them monetarily. In other words, they become patrons. With the site, all of the creators’ content still remains free to those that don’t or can’t donate money, while giving patrons rewards or gifts from the creator in return for supporting them.

  • What is Patreon

  • Patreon has truly changed the way one can support their favorite creators, and it’s a win-win for both the creator and the patron. Patrons get cool perks, including interaction with the creator, depending on the level of patronage. And the creators aren’t left solely relying on ad revenue, which hasn’t always been regarded as reliable.

Patreon has empowered many artists to create better content… and more of it. Some creators have even set patronage goals, while other creators take ads off their content once they hit those goals. No ads for anybody!

  • Jack and his Patreon team even made this video to help creators who are new to Patreon make a successful Patreon page! Jack even shows us an example of a successful Patreon page, and why their Patreon launch was so successful.

With Patreon, Jack has also showed the world that in a world where lots of people are trying to get content for free. Trying to download movies online for free, so on and so forth. There fans out there willing to pay to support their favorite artists, especially when they know that their money is indeed going to the artist. Not only that, but there are a lot of fans willing to do so. Just ask Pentatonix!
