Will Adam Richman’s Repulsive Rant Cost Him His Career?

The former Travel Channel host has stepped down after angrily lashing out against critics.

  • Following his stint as host of Man vs. Food, Adam Richman lost a lot of weight through diet and exercise. But in documenting his own progress, Richman made the unfortunate choice of using the #thinspiration hashtag, apparently out of ignorance to the term’s anorexic meaning.

  • In the fall of 2013, Richman made headlines for dropping 60 lbs after having ballooned up during years as host of the contest-eating program ‘Man vs. Food.’

  • A Men’s Health article from the time provides background…

As the host of TV’s Man v. Food, Adam Richman ate massive portions of greasy grub for a living. But then he ditched the show, overcame his bad habits, and took control of his body.

  • And then, earlier this week…

While continuing to document and share his inspirational weight-loss progress, Richman used one poorly selected hashtag, seemingly out of sheer ignorance: #thinspiration.

  • Recoiling in disgust, a body-acceptance blogger named Amber lashed out…

Just seems like another boring self-congratulatory weight loss photo. . .until we get to the last tag. Thinspiration? Oh really? Now for those of you not hip to the lingo, thinspiration is very popular in pro-anorexia and pro-bulimia circles, generally consisting of pictures of emaciated bodies, mantras like ‘what’s more important, that slice of pizza or a thigh gap?’ and suggestions, tips, and motivation to either starve or purge. (Regardless of whether or not you agree with dieting, starving or purging are things that should never be encouraged.) Without context, thinspiration may not seem like a bad word, but a simple google search proves that it was created by a community of people with eating disorders to inspire each other to continue and celebrate their illnesses.

  • Amber was not wrong in her assessment of what the #thinspiration hashtag means and how it has been used. Richman could have been more careful in researching what terms he invokes to describe and promote his own fitness. But it doesn’t end there.

Amber and her supporters angrily confronted Richman, who made another unfortunate decision to meet and match their anger with unchecked anger of his own.
