A 6.9 Magnitude earthquake ripped through Southern Mexico and Guatemala Monday morning, killing at least three people and damaging dozens of homes.
The quake hit at 6:23 a.m. near the Mexico-Guatemala border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This sent panicked residents running through the streets in the dark.
The Earthquake, located 37 miles below the earth’s surface, initially registered 7.1 on the Richter Scale, but that figure was later lowered to 6.9.
At least two people were killed while they were in their own homes from collapsed walls in the Guatemalan town of Pati, Firefighters spokesman, Raul Hernandez, reported. Hernandez also revealed that at least 30 homes were damaged, as well as landslides and toppled utility poles.
One person was also killed in Huixtla, Mexico by a collapsed wall, as reported on the Mexican state of Chiapas’ Twitter account. The shake was reportedly felt as far away as Mexico City, however there were no immediate reports of damages.
