The Guy who Survived on Pizza for 25 Years
A 15-minte long documentary tells the story of a man who has survived on pizza every day for the past 25 years.
“I really love pizza. I really love pizza,” Dan Janssen of Maryland told Munchies in the video.
Janssen goes on to tell people about his whirlwind adventure through the web as his diet went viral thanks to an article written by a friend on VICE.
“Everyone who knows Dan wonders how he’s still alive. Beyond the fact that his diet is completely horrifying, he also has diabetes and frequently gets low blood sugar. When his blood sugar dips into the danger zone, it sometimes results in his blacking out on the kitchen floor in his underwear with frozen food scattered around him,” VICE reported. “There was that one time he bought a new car and then blacked out on the drive home. He swerved off the road and totaled the vehicle, but besides from that isolated incident, his pizza diet seems to be working out for him.”
Despite this, months later, Janssen is still going strong. His answer back in February 25th supplements what he claims in the documentary: the pizza diet is one worth continuing. People who watch the video are often surprised by Janssen’s slender frame and seemingly good health.
“I haven’t had anyone truly concerned about it, except for my fiancée, and she’s not overly concerned,” Janssen told the source. “With her advice and support, I’ve been seeing a therapist about my food aversion, and we’ve been exploring why I have such a limited diet. I must say, even though I sound like a horribly unhealthy and fat person, I’m not. I’m thin. I have tons of energy, and I feel great every day, so there might be something to the exclusive pizza diet.”
Janssen’s fiancée seems supportive, but worried about her husband-to-be’s health. About halfway through the video, viewers watch he attempt to coax Dan away from plain cheese pizza and into the realm of pizza with vegetables.
“Eat the mushroom. You have to have all the flavors together: that’s what makes it so spectacular. You’re gonna try it and you’re gonna love it,” she goads.
He takes a bite and gags into his napkin.
It is behavior like this that inspires controversy in the battleground that is YouTube’s comment section. Audiences have laughed it off as childish behavior and have scorned it as a stupid idea. Either way, Janssen has won over the internet with his pizza eating antics.
