The New Smashing Pumpkins Song Is Actually Pretty Good

Well, this is unexpected. The first finished track from The Smashing Pumpkins upcoming album, Monuments to an Elegy, is a beautifully-crafted, melodic piece of modern pop that sounds like it could have been written at the same time of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

Of course, Corgan and company have been “gone” for so long, that it would be premature to declare them “back” just yet. After all, Corgan’s produced over a decade of subpar music and some downright baffling projects.

“Being Beige,” however, feels like something new and fresh from a guy who’s been notably soured on the music business. It’s worth noting that Corgan himself may doubt his own ability to write an honest and true rock song. “If there’s honesty in this lyric, it’s that there’s something amiss in our cosmos,” he told Rolling Stone.

Either way, “Being Beige” is the best and most simple pop song Smashing Pumpkins have released in years. It takes me back to “thirty-three.” Here’s hoping it’s part of a trend.
