It may not seem like it, but there’s more to being a popular touring DJ and electronic musician than just turning knobs, pushing buttons and moving your hands behind your ears to indicate that the crowd should “make some noise.”

You also have to make sure people aren’t excessively filming you by flinging stage monitors at them. At least, that’s how EDM mainstay Richie Hawtin reacted during a recent gig at New York City’s Time Warp when a female fan encroached on his personal space with her cell phone.

In the video – shot by another fan who was at the venue at the time – a female fan can be seen getting close up to Hawtin and taking out her phone to shoot some video. Hawtin reacts by shoving a monitor in her general direction, which proceeds to topple over and fall on her.

After the video, by Pat Curran, went viral on Facebook and Twitter, Hawtin posted his own response online. He said:

“It was not my intention that the speaker fell. Only to nudge the monitors in her direction and for her to understand that perhaps she had filmed enough. I was as surprised as I’m sure she was when it moved the way it did and the top speaker fell off of the stack. For that, I’m extremely sorry and embarrassed about what happened.”

Hawtin also said that he has tried to find the woman and apologize personally, but has thus far been unsuccessful.
