IMAX projectors are one of those underrated marvels of modern technology. Or not, depending on how often you go to the movies. Not to sound like a shill, but seeing a movie in IMAX is always a treat. But how are these behemoth projectors maintained? What happens when something needs fixing? And most importantly, how many projectionists does it take to change an IMAX lightbulb?
These complex machines are large, cumbersome and dangerous. The projector in this particular video, out of the Hackworth IMAX Dome Theater inside San Jose’s Tech Museum, weighs 2,000 lbs. The protective masks the projectionists wear are to guard against IMAX bulbs exploding in their face. Yikes! But it’s all worthwhile once that jaw-dropping screen presentation starts.
