SNL Take “Game of Thrones” to South Centros

Game of Thrones meets Boyz n The Hood, starring Ice Cube
By Bailey Johnson
  • HBO’s Game of Thrones kicked off its fifth season this weekend. The sprawling fantasy world created by George R.R. Martin has taken viewers and readers across a world-spanning saga of murder, dragons, and intrigue. But not until this weekend were viewers invited to explore the eighth kingdom of Westeros. Welcome to South Centros.

  • Starring Ice Cube (Kenan Thompson), this Game of Thrones is directed by John Singletary, who created 1991’s classic Boyz n The Hood. South Centros, much like the South Central L.A. depicted in Singetary’s movie, is a rough part of town where death lurks around every corner. (Not unlike the rest of the Game of Thrones world, actually.) At one point Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jamie Lannister on the actual Game of Thrones, shows up for some drive-by showboating.

It’s a convoluted story, just like the real Game of Thrones. As one character says, “It’s a long story. Some say too long. If it was a book, it’d be seven long-ass books.”
