  • In the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling that same-sex marriage is legal in the United States, you may have heard a common refrain. “How will I explain this to my kids?” a stereotypical concerned parent may ask. It’s not as goofy a question as it looks. How do you explain love, commitment, and partnership to a little kid? The folks at Jimmy Kimmel Live aren’t tackling that. Instead, they’re flipping the tables. How do kids explain gay marriage?

Pretty well, it turns out! Most of the children interviewed in this video are able to sum up the issue pretty easily. “It’s when a boy and a boy or a girl and a girl get married,” one of the wise kids explains. In fact, that seems like the easiest part of the issue for children. The kids have a much harder time explaining why people get married. Our favorite response is one child who is asked when people should consider marriage. He answers, “In the afternoon.”
