Are Anna and Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen” Related to Tarzan?

It’s official – Disney’s Tarzan is actually the little brother of Anna and Elsa from “Frozen”! Sort of. Actually it was just a joke between two Disney directors as they were walking into a meeting, but THAT STILL COUNTS.

If you didn’t know, some Disney fans pounced on the theory that Elsa and Anna are related to Tarzan – because they all lost their parents in a shipwreck, you see, and what if the Queen of Arendelle was pregnant and had a baby on the ship, and then the Royal Family survived the shipwreck and washed up on the shore of a jungle, only for the King and Queen to be killed by a leopard and the baby to be raised by gorillas? It all makes sense!

“Frozen” co-director Jennifer Lee shared during a Reddit AMA that her co-director, Chris Buck – who also worked on “Tarzan” – once explained this theory to her, and fans immediately took this as confirmation of the crossover. But Buck later clarified to MTV News that he was spinning a tale for Lee as they were heading into a meeting.

”I said, ‘Of course Anna and Elsa’s parents didn’t die.’ Yes, there was a shipwreck, but they were at sea a little bit longer than we think they were, because the mother was pregnant, and she gave birth on the boat, to a little boy. They get shipwrecked, and somehow they really washed way far away from the Scandinavian waters, and they end up in the jungle. They end up building a tree house, and a leopard kills them, so their baby boy is raised by gorillas. So in my little head, Anna and Elsa’s brother is Tarzan — but on the other side of that island are surfing penguins, to tie in a non-Disney movie, ‘Surf’s Up.’ That’s my fun little world.”

Surfing penguins aside, though, this theory is a bit of a stretch. If you watch “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” (take a few minutes to sing along if you have to), you’ll notice that Anna says “See you in two weeks!” as she says goodbye to her parents. The gorillas in “Tarzan” live in Africa – probably somewhere near Congo, if you want to be specific. So for this theory to work, the king and queen of Arendelle either managed to sail all the way from Scandanavia to the Equator in less than a week before their ship went down, or they were shipwrecked in European waters and survived a couple of months being swept out to sea and down the western coast of Africa.

Of course, this is the same fantasy universe that saw Aladdin and Jasmine fly from the Jordan River to Beijing in one night, so who am I kidding. But I’m sticking to the much more plausible theory that Anna and Elsa’s parents were actually related to Rapunzel’s parents from “Tangled” and were on their way to celebrate the birth of the princess when the shipwreck happened. See, the animation matches and everything.
