Macklemore (and some Rap Legends) Head Downtown in New Video

  • Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are back with a new album, after the massive breakthrough success of their 2012 independent release “The Heist.” (AKA “The one with Thrift Shop and that other song about how he thought he was gay but then wasn’t.”)

Mr. Haggerty’s latest opens with the purchase of a moped and then continues with the rapper and his crew tooling around Downtown Spokane, Washington. Eventually, they run into another crew – headed up by influential old school rappers Caz, Kool and Melle Mel – and the two groups have a sort of “West Side Story”-by-way-of-Michael-Jackson’s-“Beat It” video standoff.

(Also, there’s a cameo from Seattle baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr. in there. No, really. He’s there. In the fish store.)

Oh, also, that’s Foxy Shazam’s Eric Nally on the hook, and driving around on that weird chariot-type thing. (Cue “the more you know” music.)

This is the first new music video Mackle (can I call you Mackle?) has shared post-“Heist,” but it’s not the first song. Earlier this month, on Soundcloud, he shared a new duet with singer Ed Sheeran called “Growing Up (Sloane’s Song)” about the joys of fatherhood.

  • You can hear “Downtown” LIVE for the very first time when Mackle and R.Lew perform on Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. (Follow us now @WhatsTrending on Twitter. We’ll be live-streaming the whole show! I have at least 4 more “Thrift Shop” references I haven’t even used yet!)
