A white man at the VMAs who jumped into the #BlackLivesMatter debate while sitting in the audience quickly discovered he was sitting next to Franchesca Ramsey, one of the most well-known proponents for racial equality on YouTube – and she got the whole confrontation on tape.

In a blog they filmed back at the hotel room, Ramsey and her friend and co-host Patrick explained the context of the incident, which included the man literally covering his ears and later threatening to fight Patrick.

“The point is that he was a grown man, like he could be somebody’s granddaddy, and he had the nerve to stand up and act like he was going to fight, literally because we said to him, ‘It’s not All Lives Matter, it’s Black Lives Matter, because this is about racism and police brutality,’” Ramsey said.

During the awards show, “Empire” star Jussie Smollet said “Black Lives Matter” in his speech about gay rights and police brutality, to which a man sitting one seat over from Ramsey replied “Bullshit” and “All lives matter” – a now-cliched response commonly used to derail discussions about racial inequality.

Ramsey, who has written and spoken at length about #BlackLivesMatter and police brutality on YouTube and social media, quickly responded.

When Patrick tried to talk to the man, the exchange became so heated that Ramsey was worried a fight might break out.

Eventually Ramsey pulled out her phone and filmed herself as she forcefully tried to explain the the issue.

“It’s #BlackLivesMatter for a reason,” she said repeatedly, while the man argued back, “We’re here to watch this,” repeated the “All lives matter” slogan and tried to cover his ears. By the end of the Twitter video, he was taking out his own phone to film Ramsey.
