Laura and Howard have been married 73 years – she’s 93 and he’s 92. Throughout their life together, their love song was “You’ll Never Know” performed by Rosemary Clooney with Harry James, which comforted Laura when Howard went away to fight in World War II. In later years, they would often sing the song together at family gatherings.

Now Laura’s life is coming to an end. She was recently in hospice care, and her family had been told she had a week to live. She was too weak to sing when her husband came to see her perhaps for the last time, so he took over and sang the rest of the song while stroking her face. Though she was nearly blind and he was hard of hearing, they were expressing their love for each other as deeply as ever.

“Isn’t he sweet?” Laura said teasingly as Howard sang to her. “He likes me!”

The video went viral on Facebook and received an outpouring of messages from people moved by their story. As of September 20, Laura was still alive and was allowed to go home to rest peacefully with her family, so her spirits were uplifted by the warm public response to the video.

“Our family along with the wonderful people from hospice are taking care of her and making sure she remains as pain-free and comfortable as possible while she prepares for her nearing departure,” one of her grandchildren wrote. “We all thank you so much for the love and kind words.”
