Did Harry Styles Just “Taylor Swift” Taylor Swift?

One Direction's single "Perfect" sounds a whole lot like Taylor Swift's "Style," and the internet is delighted.

    Oh, these crazy kids.

One Direction just released their new single “Perfect,” and even though I’m a grown-ass woman with no interest whatsoever in 1D, I dropped everything to listen to it when I found out the song is blatantly spoofing Taylor Swift.

Let’s give a round of applause to One Direction’s managers, this was a brilliant PR move.

For the record, here is “Perfect” on Spotify:

  • And here is Taylor Swift’s “Style,” which is about her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles – something I should have realized way way way earlier than I did because it’s IN THE DAMN TITLE.

  • Harry Styles takes the lead for the chorus of “Perfect,” which goes like this:

But if you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms

And if you like having secret little rendezvous

If you like to do the things you know that we shouldn’t do

Baby I’m perfect, baby I’m perfect for you

And if you like midnight driving with the windows down

And if you like going places we can’t even pronounce

If you like to do whatever you’ve been dreaming about

Baby you’re perfect, baby you’re perfect

Not only does “midnight driving with the windows down” clearly refer to Swift’s “midnight, he comes and picks me up, no headlights,” but you can literally belt out “You’ve got that James Dean daydream look in your eye” over the top of it, which I know for a fact because we stopped working at the What’s Trending office and turned the speakers up to do it.

Asked in an interview if the song is about his ex-girlfriend, Styles said, “It doesn’t always have to be an exact story.” Very true, Harry – I mean, it IS an exact story in this case but it doesn’t HAVE to be.

“And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out, and if you looking for someone to write your breakup songs about…”

Dude, c’mon, you’re fooling precisely zero people here.
