How did this terrible idea for a Bloomingdale’s advertisement get through the numerous PR people it must have gone through to make it to print, without someone pointing out “Hey, that’s kind of date-rapey”?

The department store just had to issue an apology for a Rebecca Minkoff advertisement in their catalogue, which featured a laughing woman being eyed creepily by a Robin Thicke lookalike, with the caption “Spike your best friend’s eggnog when they’re not looking.”

So your best friend will … what? Start acting crazy at the holiday party and potentially embarrass herself? Drive home not realizing she’s intoxicated? Drunkenly make out with you? Go to bed with you and wake up not remembering what happened? I can’t think of any good scenarios here.

After an internet backlash that any reasonable ad department should have seen coming, Bloomingdale’s issued this apology:

”In reflection of recent feedback, the copy we used in our recent catalog was inappropriate and in poor taste. Bloomingdale’s sincerely apologizes for this error in judgment.”
