  • Actresses who are so relentlessly quirky and adorable that a significant number of people can’t stand them have got to stick together.

Anne Hathaway, who inspires headlines like “Why do people hate Anne Hathaway?” every time she appears in public, jumped to the defense of Jennifer Lawrence who recently dealt with her own backlash.

Lawrence, you’ll remember, got herself into hot water after the Golden Globes when she scolded a foreign reporter with a heavy accent for holding up his phone while asking her a question. “You can’t live your whole life behind your phone, bro,” she said, and then mocked him again when he confused the Golden Globes with the Oscars.

  • Her haters said the reporter was using his phone to translate his question into English and took this as further proof that she’s rude and probably racist, while her fans insisted she was just being her usual goofy awkward adorable self. Another guy at the Golden Globes press conference said the foreign journalist wasn’t reading off his phone at all, he was taking pictures or video.

Hathaway took the pro-JLaw side of the argument in a Facebook post:

Dear the Internet, it’s become pretty clear that the Jennifer Lawrence “scolding” was taken out of context and that she was dryly joking with a journalist who was indeed using his phone to take photos of her.

Let’s not continue the sad but common practice of building people – especially women- up just to viciously tear them down when we perceive them to have misstepped. Jennifer is a beautiful, talented, wildly successful, popular, FOUR TIME OSCAR NOMINATED young woman. Please let us not punish her for these things.

She signed her post “A J-Law fan” followed by #supportstrongwomen, #imwithher and #whycantwegiveloveonemorechance

This is what I’m talking about with the “relentlessly adorable” thing, Anne.
