  • Before there were mega film franchises of gritty modern reboots of comic book characters, there was Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. And it was freaking awesome.

YouTuber “The Unusual Suspect” gave the LOTR films the “Suicide Squad” treatment, swapping out the Joker and Harley Quinn for Aragorn and Gimli and the Hobbits, and setting the films’ funniest one-liners and biggest fight scenes to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

The whole thing works surprisingly well – after all, both LOTR and “Suicide Squad” are about a team of mismatched, unlikely heroes who set off on a mission to save the world which will probably get them all killed. It’s also a reminder of how great LOTR really was. Can any scene with Jared Leto’s green-haired emo Joker be anywhere near as awesome as that part where Aragorn lopped a giant goblin’s head off with a sword? No, I don’t think so.

Of course, it also underlines how much worse “The Hobbit” films were, largely because they were trying too hard to compete with superhero franchises like “The Avengers” the way “Suicide Squad” is now. So depressing, man.
