Apparently, public display of affection has its repercussions. Vanessa Hudgens and her beau, Austin Butler, spent a romantic weekend in Sedona, Arizona for Valentine’s Day, but after sharing a picture on Instagram of “Austin + Vanessa” carved into one of the famous rocks, the two may be in some serious trouble.

While it’s been confirmed that the couple is under investigation for allegedly defacing property, no conclusive verdict has been made. Hudgens has since removed the photo that caused trouble but kept a few others to remember the dreamy vaca.

In an interview with US Weekly, Coconino National Forest Public Affairs Officer Brady Smith explains that defacing the red rocks is a violation of federal law and could result in a $5,000 fine or up to six months of jail time.
“We have found that when one person carves something, it encourages others to carve,” Smith argues.
For now on, it seems like carving names in the sand is probably the safest bet.
