  • This Friday, fans again took to Twitter under the hashtags #FreeKesha and #SonySupportsRape, this time in anger and heartbreak after a New York City judge ruled against the 28-year-old pop star, refusing to allow her to be released from her contract with Sony.

The contract requires Kesha to make six more albums with Dr. Luke (aka Lukasz Gottwald ), a man she alleges raped and abused her for years. This essentially freezes Kesha’s career unless she works with the man she accuses, and even then her lawyer argues that it’s unlikely Sony would promote her music properly.

Although some voices seemed to be in support of the judge’s ruling, the main sentiment in the court of public opinion, with nearly 2 million tweets using the #freekesha hashtag at the time of posting, seems to be outrage at a system that would find more importance in upholding contract law than protecting women.

Many are also urging other strong female vocalists to weigh in – and while some like Lady Gaga have spoken out, others such as Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift have yet to say anything publicly.

  • According to RAINN, only 32 out of every 100 rapes even get reported and only 2 rapists serve time. Couple that with having to relive the trauma, being called a liar by some, and generally being judged as to if you deserved it, and we have an awful environment for victims of sexual assault to receive justice. This ruling certainly doesn’t improve the outlook of women (and men) who’ve been abused.

What do you think; should Kesha have been let out of her contract? Let us know in the comments below.
