  • You probably don’t know Silvana Lima, but she’s the best female surfer in Brazil, and one of the best professional surfers in the world. Even many Brazilians don’t know who she is, though, because she wasn’t been able to get any sponsorship deals for over a decade. Why? Probably because she doesn’t look like a model.

  • Like most athletes who make a considerable amount of their income from brand sponsorships, Lima went in search of a corporate partner after winning 8 national titles as Brazil’s best female surfer. As she discusses in the above BBC video, she got a lot of Nos.

She bred French bulldogs in order to pay for a trip to a competition in New Zealand (which she won).

After 13 sponsorless years, she finally has brands knocking on her door. It took a public campaign called Silvana Free – where fans sponsored her trips – to make it happen.
