  • Actress Daisy Ridley has recently been ridiculed for being “too skinny” for her role of Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. An Instagram user created a meme of her character Rey and posted with the caption, “I can’t believe the unrealistic expectations I’m setting for young girls. Who cast me anyway? Don’t they know real women have curves?”

The “thin ideal” has been circulating around the Internet for years, and some people are fighting back through social media. However, why can’t both girls with AND without curves be real?! Not every woman is built with a curvy body, including Daisy, who happens to be naturally thin.

Daisy was adamant about stating her perspective on what makes women real and beautiful, so she responded to the user by reposting the meme to her Instagram with the caption, “”Real women are all shapes and sizes, all ethnicities, all levels of brave, have families, don’t have families. I’m a ‘real woman’ like every other woman in this world.”

Negative backlash followed her post, and it has since been deleted. To clear up her critique, she posted a new statement on Instagram.

  • “I will not apologise for how I look, what I say and how I live my life cause what’s happening inside is much more important anyway and I am striving to be the best version of myself, even if I stumble along the way.”

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. The example Daisy is setting for woman around the world has everything to do with who her character is and nothing to do with how she looks.
