  • Video from a middle school in San Antonio, Texas, shows a police officer body slamming a 6th grader to the ground.

Sixth grader Janissa Valdez was having a fight with another student when Officer Joshua Kehm intervened — and subdued her by lifting her off her feet and slamming her face-first to the floor.

According to Janissa’s mother, she had bruising on her upper right temple, but it has since gone away. The officer has been put on leave, according to San Antonio School District spokesperson Leslie Price.

”This video is very concerning, and we are working to get all of the details. We certainly want to understand what all occurred, and we are not going to tolerate excessive force in our district.”

Janissa’s mother said that her daughter had been bullied at the beginning of the school year and had been in fights with the other student before. She will wait for the outcome of the school’s investigation before deciding whether she’ll take action against the officer.

“I just want something done. Because he could go back and do it again to my daughter or another student.”

As you’d expect, the reaction to this video is divided between those who think Kehm was just doing his job, and those who think a grown man should never use violence against a 12-year-old girl, no matter how badly she’s misbehaving.

What do you think? Should the officer lose his job over this incident, or has it been blown out of proportion?
