  • Never underestimate the power of the written word, folks.

The Hydraulic Press Channel has been busy crushing all kinds of things and getting millions of views, but they may have bitten off more than they could chew when they tried to crush a book.

The volume appears to be an English-to-Finnish/Finnish-to-English dictionary. “I chose this book because I don’t need it anymore,” the operator explained — probably because he now practices his English by making YouTube videos.

You might not expect anything dramatic to happen when you crush a dictionary, but that book put up a hell of a fight. On the first attempt the press stamped a deep hole in the cover, but the pages and the spine stubbornly held together.

For the next try, he added a smaller steel component to the press to add more pressure to a smaller area. That did the job — the dictionary finally exploded — but not before the book got its revenge.

The force of the book collapsing was so great, it flexed the entire frame of the press, broke the glass blast shield and knocked the cameras over. The main camera was so damaged that the footage didn’t survive.

“And there was awful noise and mayhem,” as the operator put it.
