  • Donald Trump held a rally in Atlanta this week in which he linked Saudi Arabia’s civil liberties track record to presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. To point out how bad things are in Saudi Arabia, Trump said we should ask women, and “ask the gays,” how life is for them. Here’s a clip from the original speech:

  • Now, on the one hand, Trump is right about civil liberties in Saudi Arabia. They’re pretty medieval for women and “the gays.” But jeez, could he have said that any worse? First of all, calling any marginalized group “the” anything has a pretty nasty connotation. When was the last time you heard a politician say they’d reach out to “the blacks” or “the Jews” instead of referencing the overall community? And second of all, his suggestion that he is somehow more of a “friend” to “the gays” than Clinton completely ignores his own business dealings in Saudi Arabia, of which there are many, according to the Independent.

Of course, the good people of Twitter picked up on this hypocrisy pretty quickly, turning #AskTheGays into a popular hashtag and tweeting reaction GIFs galore. Here are some of our favorites:
