  • Yesterday was #NationalDogDay — and right on cue, we got a trailer for the next adorable dog movie, “A Dog’s Purpose.” Which makes me wonder if Universal Studios made up #NationalDogDay as a marketing ploy, but whatever.

The film is about a little boy from the 1950s named Ethan and his cute puppy Bailey, who narrates the story in a voice-over from Josh Gad. They become best friends, go everywhere together, have adventures and grow up side by side, all the usual stuff.

And then, like most dog movies, the beloved dog dies and everyone is heartbroken. Here’s the twist, though — he’s reincarnated over and over as different types of dogs so he can bring joy to a bunch of different people over the years, until one day he’s reunited with Ethan, now an old man.

On the one hand, it’s a very sweet (if corny) idea that dogs were put here on Earth just for us and they’ll never really leave us behind. On the other hand, these jerks at Universal have found a way to not just have the dog die in the movie, but die over and over and over again, for maximum gut-wrenching sobs.

Judging from the reaction to the trailer, people aren’t going to handle it well.
