  • There’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Michel Gondry, but a much smaller chance that you’ve never seen his work. Outside of directing the much-loved Jim Carrey/Kate Winslet feature Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he’s also directed music videos for a ton of well-known artists, including The Rolling Stones, Daft Punk, Björk, and The White Stripes.

Though he’s collaborated with The White Stripes four times in the past, this time around, Gondry decided to surprise the band with a music video he shot without their knowledge. It’s for the newly released “City Lights,” a previously abandoned track that was revived to be The White Stripes’ first new music since 2008.

The video itself very much adheres to the arthouse style for which Gondry is so recognized. It’s a static shot of someone tracing images into the condensation of a shower wall, yet somehow manages to be so mesmerizing in its simplicity.
