  • If you live in a city with a Korean neighborhood, you’ve probably tried Korean barbecue. Well guess what? North Koreans got to try American-style barbecue, and they loved every bit of it, just as South Koreans did. Think: mouth-watering, tender, and hot barbecue from Alabama, Texas, and Missouri– tasted for the first time by people from a country where the supply of meat keeps people from eating it regularly. Topped with barbecue sauce. Needless to say, they were in for a treat!

  • We can see the video start off with Rachel, who escaped North Korea when she was 12 years old. She takes one look at the platter of pulled pork, brisket, and burnt ends, and digs in with a smile.

  • North Koreans also discussed life back in the hermit country while eating some delicious barbecue. Here’s what one woman had to say about people living in North Korea: “They think of North Koreans as simply bad people, but that’s just the people that rule the country. Kim Jung-Un, high ranking officials. Regular North Koreans are some of the warmest people you’ll ever meet.”

This is a new experience for some of the eaters, who lived under North Korean rule. When asked “How often did you eat meat in North Korea?” One answered, “How often isn’t the right question to be asking. You should be asking, ‘When have you eaten meat before?’ On Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il’s birthdays. They [the Government] would give us a few grams. “

  • The brisket was everyone’s favorite, with eaters commenting on how delicious it is. One eater loved barbecue sauce so much that she said she wouldn’t mind putting it on rice! We don’t know about that, but then again, barbecue sauce does make everything taste better. Maybe I should try it on kimchi fried rice?
