This was a trying weekend for the country, and one of our greatest constitutional crises and national crises in our nation’s history, after Donald Trump, the forty fifth president of the United States, abruptly stopped immigration for legal refugees coming from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Libya through an executive order.
Refugees have been detained in airports, living in a nightmarish no man’s land where they cannot enter the country at a moment’s whim. There have been reports that many of those detained have been asked questions about their allegiance to Donald Trump and many have been taken away from courts and forced to deal exclusively with the executive branch in an unlawful and unprecedented show of unlawful power.
We thought an 11th hour saving grace from the ACLU would help, after a federal judge issued a stay against the Muslim Ban. However, Donald Trump has ignored it, and issued orders for people to continue to be detained.
Although the president claims this is to keep our country safer, already it has put our country in untold danger. Other than displacing so many of our fellow green card holding legal Americans who are not yet citizens, it has also given Isis invaluable ammunition in its propaganda campaign against the United States, as Trump has started to truly make the United States the sort of country ISIS continues to discuss in its propaganda.
This weekend, protests erupted across the country against this unconstitutional executive order. People gathered in airports all over the country including, JFK and LAX. Politicians sprung forward with John Lewis, Chuck Schumer and even Barack Obama making statements on the matter.
Here are some photos from the protests.
Also, more people showed up this protest than showed up to Trump’s inauguration, for whatever it’s worth, which to him is everything.
But right now, the situation can best be illustrated in two optics. One is of a five year old child, detained and separated from his parents for hours because of this unconstitutional ban. And one is Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s words on the matter.
Here is your populist strongman, ladies and gentlemen. Terrified of a tiny child, and detaining innocent human beings. Students, professors, and an Academy Award nominee have also been barred from entering our country. Already, rather than being made safer, we are being robbed of great human beings.
Although the United States has had a spotty history when it comes to dealing with minorities, never before has it so blatantly discriminated on foreigners based on religion. A ban on a people is unconstitutional, and a terrifying sign of what may be to come.
