Tensions Rise In Anaheim, CA After Cop Pulls Gun On Teen

Many protests have arisen in Anaheim, CA over this week due to a controversial altercation involving a cop hitting, grabbing, and eventually firing a gun at a group of unarmed teens in an event reminiscent of too many that have come to light in the past few years.

It began when a police officer called a 13 year old girl the c word after the 13 year old stepped on his lawn. This was followed by the girl’s teenage friends arguing with the cop— who was off duty and gave no indication of his status as a police officer. The cop then grabbed one of the teens and fired a gun, causing the teens to scatter. No one was hurt in a serious way, luckily, but the altercation has raised important questions concerning the use of guns, police violence, and race.

The details of the case are complicated — with the officer claiming that he heard the teen say “shoot” when he was saying sue — but the optics of it— including an adult dangerously firing a gun at someone so young and unarmed — do not look good. This incident also follows a series of similar events concerning police officers and violence which was deemed unwarranted and motivated by race by the public at large.
