  • Jay Z’s “4:44” has just dropped on Tidal, and it is full of revealing lyrics.

On his newest album “4:44,” Jay Z answers to the claims of infidelity made throughout Beyonce’s album “Lemonade.” He also publicly discusses his mother’s coming out. It’s a revealing and beautiful album from the rap legend.

The title track opens with the lines “Look, I apologize, often womanize / Took for my child to be born / see through a woman’s eyes.” Though the Carters have had problems in the past, they just recently welcomed their twins — Rumi and Sir — into the world.

Another big revelation on 4:44 is in the song “Smile,” where Jay Z discusses his mother’s struggle with her sexuality. “Smile” includes the lines “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian,” and “Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take …  Cried tears of joy when you fell in love / Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her.” Gloria Carter, Jay Z’s mother, appears at the end of the track to deliver spoken word lines —

Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be / No harm for them, no harm for me / But life is short, and it’s time to be free / Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed.

Jay Z has often been an ally for the LGBTQ community, advocating for gay marriage back in 2012. Over all, 4:44 has been met with a lot of love, and is considered to be a bold new entry in the discography of the legendary Jay-Z, and is available exclusively on Tidal.
