  • A relationship between rapper Tupac Amaru Shakur and pop-singer Madonna has been confirmed.

The pair were often rumored to be together at the height of their careers, but nothing was ever officially confirmed. Aside from the few, vintage photos of Tupac and Madonna any specific details of their relationship were lost with his untimely death in 1996.

The pop-singer has been very hush-hush of their relationship over the years, but there is now proof that the two definitely had something special going on.

Earlier today, TMZ published what looks to be a break-up letter addressed to “M” from Tupac himself. The letter is dated Jan 15, 1995 4:30 A.M. (meaning Tupac was serving time at New York’s Clinton Correctional Facility for sexual assault when he wrote to Madonna).

The letter posted by TMZ, unfortunately, cannot be read in full. From what is available, however, it seems as though Tupac breaking up with Madonna over race.

For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting. But for me at least in my previous perception I felt due to my “image” that I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was. I never meant to hurt you.

In regards to his “image,” Tupac was most likely referring to his status as an activist and advocate for social justice — focusing primarily on the perils of America’s black communities. You see, both of his parents were Black Panthers, and he was even named after a South American revolutionary. In his eyes, to date Madonna would not be ideal.

Though Tupac opens the letter initially apologizing to “M,” he doesn’t shy away from admitting that he too has been hurt by her.

“I’m off to rehabilitate all the rappers and basketball players” or something to that effect. Those words cute me deep seeing how I had never known you to be with any rappers besides myself. It was at this moment out of hurt & a natural instinct to strike back and defend my heart & ego that I said a lot of things… Can you feel me?

The note was intended to end things between the two, but Tupac assured Madonna he still wanted her in his life.

I offer my friendship once again this time much stronger and focused. If you are still interested I would like to further discuss this with you but some of it couldn’t wait. I felt compelled to tell you… Just in case anything happened to me.

Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada the following year.

Though it is uncertain how the letter wound up in circulation, it will be up for auction with a starting bid of $100,000 at the Gotta Have Rock and Roll sale July 19-28.

As a fan of Tupac Shakur, seeing this letter gave me chills. The man was incredibly poetic. It’s almost as if I could hear his voice in my head speaking these words!

It’s a shame that something so priceless will be up for auction, but I truly hope it falls in the right hands.
