  • Rideshare app Lyft is testing out “Taco Mode,” a push-button option for riders to make a pitstop at Taco Bell before arriving at their final destination to receive a free taco.

Taco Bell partnered with Lyft to help erase the stigma around asking your Lyft driver to make a run for the border. “Some people are either afraid to ask or don’t know if they can ask,” says Taco Bell Marketing exec Marisa Thalberg, “We’re taking all those questions marks of, ‘Would it be unseemly to ask my Lyft driver to go through the Taco Bell drive-through?’ And now we’re not only going to make it permissible, we’re going to celebrate this behavior.”

One group that’s not exactly thrilled about the idea are the drivers. Uber and Lyft have no stated policy regarding food in drivers’ cars, but most forbid food of any kind.

Lyft is at least giving their drivers the option to opt into Taco Mode. There will be 15 Lyfts wrapped in festive taco wallpaper partaking in this experience in the beginning — with the inside of the Lyfts having menus on tablets and such.

But don’t go requesting a car just yet!

Taco Mode is currently being tested in Newport Beach, California, within a specific radius of the Taco Bell on 1400 West Coast Highway between the hours of 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM on July 27 to July 29 (and again from August 3 to August 5).

Taco Mode! Whoo! Free Taco! Restrictions may apply!
