  • Sure, you’ve probably heard of ghosting. But what about the dating crazes zombieing, benching, or breadcrumbing?

The term “ghosting” popularized in late 2014 when Tinder was at it’s peak. It’s the name the dating world gave to a potential partner that stops replying to any of your attempts at communication And now there’s not-so-new concepts being labeled to make navigating dating a bit easier.

First, zombieing! Zombieing was first labeled last year as “when an ex rises from the online dead” It could be summarized pretty well with this story from Liza Bonos. On Sunday August 21st Lisa texted a date, “Hey what happened on Friday? I was upset I never heard from you. Thought we had plans…” and then four months later the zombie rose from the dead with “Hey stranger, long time no talk”

Dating coach Francesca Hogi explains zombieing a little further saying “As our technology advances and it becomes easier to contact people out of the blue, we see it more often. She’s not going to curse me out on the phone and hurt my feelings. She’s just going to ignore my text message.” But the difference between a zombie and a decent person is that they don’t address that time has passed or that they ghosted previously.

If you’ve been benched that means you’re the side fling for when the main tings aren’t working out, and if you’re doing the benching it doesn’t *feel* malicious…. It just feels like you like them enough and you care too much to cut them off completely…. so you keep them around as an option. Which makes this the hardest one to identify if it’s happening to you, so keep your eyes peeled. The dating world is rough out there.

And finally there’s breadcrumbing. Which is exactly what it sounds like but translated into social media. You leave a like on a picture, a DM now and then, but when it comes down to it you’ll never wanna go out or get into anything real. You’re tossing down breadcrumbs that get someone thinking you’re into it only to find out you literally only stock breadcrumbs and you’ll never have the full loaf.

So have you zombied or been zombied? Have you been benched or done the benching? Are you a breadcrumber? And what other dating terms do yall use? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter at @WhatsTrending.
