  • Sometimes, the tale of firefighters saving cute animals from a fire is inspiring and sweet. And sometime it feels like a grim Far Side cartoon where your brain twists itself into shapes in order to make sense of the words you’re reading about it. This story is 100% in the latter, since it involves farmers rescuing a bunch of super cute piglets only to turn them into sausages later. “I’m sure vegetarians will hate this”, said Rachel Rivers, owner of the farm, and yeah, vegetarians will hate this but so will every other human being. This story, boy oh boy.

The story begins in Wiltshire, England after sixty tons of hay caught fire, leading firefighters to save eighteen piglets and two sows from the flames. Anyway, six months later the farm the firefighters rescued the piglets from got them in sausage form. Then they grilled and ate the very piglets they risked their lives to rescue. What’s the point of all this? What is this grim cosmic joke? Are we all just piglets being rescued from a fire ready to be turned into sausage? Man, I hope not. PETA was outraged at this, saying “”We’ll be sending Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service packs of vegan sausages so that they can see how easy it is to truly be heroes for pigs — by sparing them all suffering,” Folks, I think the thing they find the most delicious is the irony. I dunno you guys.
