  • Actress Shailene Woodley opened up about her arrest after protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline and the emotional toll the experience had on her.

Shailene Woodley, known for starring in the Divergent series, is also an environmental activist. Last October, Woodley was arrested while protesting the Dakota Access oil pipeline at the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota and charged with Criminal trespassing.

Woodley commented on her famous mugshot on Late Night with Stephen Colbert. But, in a new interview with Marie Clair UK, Woodley talks about the day police arrived at Standing Rock to arrest protestors.

Seeing the tanks roll up, Woodley remarked to herself, “‘I’m like, “This is some Divergent shit,”’ But the dystopian parallels don’t end there. Woodley spoke about the moment she was put behind bars. Woodley said, “When you’re in a jail cell and they shut that door, you realise no one can save you. If there’s a fire and they decide not to open the door, you’ll die. You are a caged animal.”

Woodley was also strip searched by the police. “I was strip-searched. Like get naked, turn over, spread your butt cheeks, bend over. They were looking for drugs in my ass.”

Woodley explains that after the arrest, she took 3 months off to handle symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder caused by the arrest. ‘There was so much trauma,’ she explains. ‘Mine was like, “What do I do now?” Kind of like a little bit of depression.’
