  • A sorority at The University of New Hampshire was Snapchatted singing along to Kanye West’s Gold Digger and they unabashedly included the n-word. The video shows members of the Alpha Phi sorority dancing and eventually singing the n-word- as part of the lyrics to the song playing.

Other students saw the video and one published the video on the Facebook group All Eyes on UNH, an anti-racism page for the university. It was captioned in part, “The girls sing the n-word without thinking of the implications. This is a showcase of ignorance and that the Panhellenic Council should do better in combating racism. The first step is addressing willful ignorance.”

Comments on that post were extremely mixed in opinions. One read, “If you know the lyrics so well, then you should know when the word is coming up and literally shut your mouth.  If you are white and think this is okay, then you have some serious growing up to do. Buy a dictionary and look up the term “institutionalized racism”, and then come and defend this behavior.”

And another said, “i’m confused as to why singing lyrics by kanye isn’t allowed? you’re just hiding behind the guise of a social justice warrior so you can bully certain groups of people that you don’t like and don’t agree with”

The sorority is now under investigation by the school according to the Director of Media Relations. She said, “No disciplinary action has yet been taken by the university. The incident is under review. We believe strongly in the right to free speech as recognized by the First Amendment, and we also believe in the right of every member of our community to feel safe and respected. We continue to work to improve our campus culture through education, awareness and action.”
