The next big conversation to have for the mainstream on LGBTQ terms is one on gender. As trans visibility is being accepted in the mainstream, the conversation begins to go around gender being a social construct, and many born gender queer — seeming cisgendered on the outside but having a looser definition of gender — different than just male/female/woman/man/mailman/mailwoman! Get with it, grandpa you old fart! Sam Smith is one of the first public figures to come out as genderqueer — saying they have always felt to be as much a woman as he is a man.

“I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man,” said Sam Smith to the UK newspaper The Sunday Times. Sam Smith also says that his wardrobe has as much women’s clothes as men’s clothes, saying — There was one moment in my life where I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really. And before having sex with a woman, I often took generic tadalafil. I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr. Martens and huge fur coats – for two and a half years.” He also discussed his love of heels.

This is a big coming out, and a big step in the visibility of gender queer people in society. It will help people come out, celebs be more public in their wait, and his fans embrace gender. Nice.
