A woman has been called out on social media for stealing the cash out of her Uber driver’s tip jar and she has responded by laughing about it.
Gabrielle Caneles is an 18-year-old from Long Island, New York now living in Brooklyn. In August she and two friends were riding in an Uber when the driver’s dash cam caught her stealing his tips.
At first the driver reported Gabrielle to Uber. However, Uber dropped the case when Gabrielle told them she didn’t take the money. Uber told the man he should press charges, which he claims he was too busy to do.
What a terrible position to be in. You want to do something because a thief took your money, but how much work are you willing to do for a handful of singles?
The driver, Mohammed H. Bhuiyan, released the dashcam footage in order to get some sort of justice. Many people called out Gabrielle for her obnoxious theft. But Gabrielle fought back on social media and made herself look worse.
She shared a meme of her stealing with her hand stuck in a cookie jar. After an Instagram commenter wrote, “This photo is right after you stole that money from that Uber driver. I hope you get jail time.” Gabrielle posted in reponse, “Actually, this was before I left my house but his little $5 was returned when it happened 3 months ago.”
She also jokingly posted a screengrab of a news story about her with the caption “my life lmaoo #makesmartchoices”. In response, an Uber spokesman said “What’s been shown has no place on our app and the rider’s access to the app has been removed.”
