Look, when you’re Mark Hamill you’ve got nothing to prove. You’ve been Luke Skywalker, you’ve been The Joker, you were Dobbu Scay, the greatest character in human history! The best one in Star Wars at least. That Dobbu Scay. Anyway, Mark Hamill did not hide just how much he hated the version of Luke Skywalker that he was presented with — not did he hide that he eventually came around to it — although not fully!
For those who have not yet seen “The Last Jedi” — I warned you I’d be spoiling stuff — Rian Johnson’s version of Luke Skywalker shows someone who — following a moral crisis — has completely given up. And we mean, completely. He lives alone with the Porgs, seems very miserable, and even the death of his old friend Han Solo isn’t enough to get him to leave the island, and Mark Hamill was NOT for it.
In an interview that’s been traveling around online, Hamill mentions that this did not feel like something he thinks Luke would do, saying “I said, ‘Jedis don’t give up.’ I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup but if he made a mistake he would try to right that wrong.” Yeah, well — this Jedi gave up! He talked about how he had so much trouble seeing Luke Skywalker behaving this way, he pretended he was a Jedi named “Jake Skywalker” or something. Ah, Jake Skywalker, the Jedi no one likes!
However, before you run to your social media platform of choice with definite scientific proof that “The New Star Wars Is Bad” (the new Star Wars had blue milk giving turkeys, the new Star Wars is good) — keep in mind what Luke Skywalker ended with — “It’s not my story anymore. It’s somebody else’s story… I came to really believe that Rian was the exact man they needed for this job.” Yeah! It’s Rey’s story now!
Sorry… people with a strong and very negative opinion on Star Wars!
