Why Tiffany Haddish Could Be the Future of Comedy

Is it too much to say Tiffany Haddish is the future of comedy? The stand-up comedian turned movie star had a breakout year in 2017, and now her freewheeling acceptance speech at an awards dinner last night, once again has people buzzing.

So who is Tiffany Haddish, and why should you be paying attention to her?

Tiffany has been performing stand-up for over a decade in Los Angeles, and has appeared in shows like BET’s Real Husbands of Hollywood and The Carmichael Show on NBC. But, it was her supporting role in last year’s Girls Trip, a raunchy comedy starring Regina Hall & Queen Latifah, that brought Tiffany Haddish mainstream attention.

Since then, every public appearance has earned her more fans. Her story about taking Will & Jada-Pinkett Smith to a swamp on Jimmy Kimmel Live was hilarious and widely shared. Take a look.

Last November, she hosted SNL and made history by being the show’s first ever black female host. Yet again, Tiffany made the most of her opportunity and her monologue was the best part of the episode.

On Wednesday night, Tiffany was honored at the New York Film Critics Circle with a “Best Supporting Actress” award for her role in Girls Trip. And once more, Tiffany stole the show.

Not only was her speech nearly 20 minutes long, but she was referenced by other winners throughout the night.

Everyone seems to be falling in love with Tiffany Haddish, but her rise to fame was nothing if not unconventional. Tiffany had a pretty dark childhood — when she 3 years old, her father left the family, and when she was 9 years old, her stepfather tampered with the brakes on her mother’s car, attempting to kill Tiffany’s mom, Tiffany, and her 4 half-siblings.

It was a stroke of luck that Tiffany and her siblings were not in the car, but the tampered brakes resulted in a crash that gave her mom brain damage and schizophrenia.

At only 9 years old, Tiffany became the primary caregiver for her family, and at 12, she and her siblings entered the foster care system, which they endured for 3 years until the children were put under the care of their grandmother.

Tiffany has been honest about her background, but it doesn’t define her — or rather, she has learned to just say “fuck it, I’m going for it.” And that’s very appealing.

Tiffany Haddish has a natural comedic talent, and people are beginning to recognize it. She’s not afraid to be herself, and that’s a big reason why she is so effortlessly funny.
